Almost nobody enjoys going to the dentist. It can be a painful and scary experience that involves a strange person sticking their fingers in your mouth and poking and probing. Unfortunately it is also an absolutely crucial part of both oral and general health. An annual checkup is the bare minimum but some people with more serious problems may need to attend more often. Beyond simply cleaning and whitening teeth they provide preventative care and treatment to their patient’s mouths. By having their clients in regularly these medical professionals are able to find and remedy potential issues before they turn into serious problems. It is because of these problems that most people fear going when in reality regular check-ups could have meant avoiding these concerns.

The best way to prevent serious a problem like tooth loss or infection is to simply schedule regular visits with your dentist. They and their staff are experts in proper hygiene and are there to assist in making good oral health a standard among their patients. A typical visit begins with a cleaning and scraping of the plaque and tartar that has built up on teeth and especially around and below the gum line. Afterwards they may offer a fluoride treatment meant to further strengthen enamel. After they have done a thorough job of cleaning the mouth they are more than willing to sit down and show proper flossing and brushing technique. Almost always they are able to provide complimentary floss and a toothbrush to practice with. They hope that all of their customers leave knowing the proper and correct way of maintaining their teeth.

In the event that too much time has elapsed between visits it is possible and likely that a cavity has formed. This happens when bacteria has been allowed to eat away at the tooth enamel and has made its way down and begun to attack the underlying structure. Unfortunately once the damage is done there is no reversing it and so the only recourse is a filling. In order to fill a cavity the dentist must remove the damaged area and literally fill in the space with one of a variety of bonding materials. In extreme cases there is also a chance of having to have extractions of any tooth that is too severely damaged to be salvaged.

Beyond the obvious health benefits of regularly seeing the dentist there are a multitude of social and personal benefits. A bright healthy smile is often the first thing new people notice when meeting someone. On the other hand one of the biggest turn offs in when someone has yellow and bad teeth or even worse sour breath. It is very easy to maintain good oral hygiene and the results on your personal and professional life can be astounding.

The dentist is there for not only the health of your mouth but also for the health of you as a person. All he or she asks is that you come in regularly so they can stay on top of your care.
