In order to ensure a proper recovery, you will need to have a game plan. In this article, we will outline a few tips to help you through the recovery process and achieve the results you’re after.

Step 1 – In the first 24 hours following your surgery, you will be unable to operate a motor vehicle or heavy machinery. Your eyes will be dressed in gauze bandages. Though you may be able to look out under your dressings, your vision will be very impaired. Make sure you tap a friend or family member to transport you to and from the surgical facility, as well as your next day follow up appointment.

Step 2 – Try your best to watch what you eat. Though there are no food restrictions following the surgery, making the decision to eat healthy throughout the recovery process will help your body heal more quickly. Avoid fast food wherever possible, stocking up on healthy home meals before your surgery.

Step 3 – Because you will likely be prescribed pain medication, alcoholic beverages should be avoided during the first 24 hours of your recovery. Opt for water instead.

Step 4 – Place a bag of frozen peas over each eyelid during the first 24-48 hours of your recovery. This will help reduce swelling while numbing any excess pain.

Step 5 – If you are uncomfortable with pain medication, try a less intense, non-prescription medication like Tylenol to help alleviate discomfort.

Step 6 – Make sure to take the appropriate amount of time away from work after eyelid surgery. If you feel comfortable enough, discuss the situation with your boss. You will need anywhere from 1 to 7 days to fully recover. During the first couple days, you vision will become blurry, making it almost impossible to see properly underneath the bandages. Bandages will likely be removed during your next-day follow-up appointment.

Step 7 – Treat yourself to some much needed rest. Try to sleep your recovery away in the initial days of your recovery. Avoid social occasions, allowing yourself to recuperate from eyelid surgery.

Step 8 – Follow your surgeon’s recommendations regarding the application of antibiotic ointment. This will help you to avoid excess scaring and speed up the recovery process.

Step 9 – Avoid the gym, heavy lifting or household chores. Discuss your situation with the surgeon in order to gauge when you will be able to resume normal activities. Most cases will call a 2 week break from these activities. Once you are cleared, you can begin to build yourself back up with light exercise and household chores.

Step 10 – If your stitches do not dissolve within a 10 day period, call your physician’s office and schedule an appointment to have them removed.
