Becoming a dentist is something that many people desire. This desire can start in elementary school or high school. In fact some people don't decide they want to become a part of this profession until they actually start college. Although this is a great choice, everyone is not suited to enter into this profession. Just like with anything else, everyone has a different set of talents, abilities, and desires that draws them to choose certain career paths. First of all, if you are repelled by the thought of looking into someone's mouth or the thought of blood, this may not be the job for you. Most of the time, these specialists are examining their patient's mouths, including their teeth, tongue and gums. Of course, they are usually wearing a mask and gloves. However, the fact still remains that this is how they spend the majority of their time. So, if this is something that does not bother you, then you may be suited for the position. As a dentist you must also be comfortable around blood. Of course, you won't experience as many blood sightings as a surgeon. However, sometimes a patient's gums may bleed. So, you must be prepared to deal with this issue at some point in time. Another way to decide whether you are suited for this position is if you like to learn. That is because a dentist can be in school for between 10 and 12 years. They must first attend a 4-year university, then 4 more years of dental school and an additional 2 to 4 years, depending on their specialization. So, if school is something that is not very appealing to you, you may want to consider another career path. Keep in mind that the learning process doesn't end with your initial schooling and training, but you must also be willing to learn throughout your career. Lastly, if you want to be a dentist, you should like with you do. That is because many of them work hard and long. Not only must a dentist love their job, but they must also enjoy helping their patients to have a healthy dental lifestyle, oral health and nice teeth. Actually enjoying what you do, will help to make sure you do your best. Doing your job well, will help to ensure that you will always be in business.
