So what exactly are the qualifications you are looking for? The American Society of Plastic Surgeons was founded in 1931 and is to date the largest organization of plastic surgeons in the world. The ASPS governs plastic surgeons who are members by requiring that the plastic surgeon maintains a certain level of skills and only operates in operating rooms that also meet a high standard of expectations. If your surgeon is a member of this board you know that they have met the benchmarks set by their peers to practice cosmetic surgery.

This is certainly a good place to start but don’t stop there. You should make sure any surgeon you actually decide to hire for your procedure is skilled in that particular procedure. Your best friend may love the doctor who did her breast augmentation but that doesn’t mean that the same doctor is skilled in doing your rhinoplasty. You want a doctor who does hundreds of your procedures every month, not a few a year. The old adage is true after all, the more you do something the better you get at it.

Not only do you need a skilled surgeon who can handle any complications that occur but you also want a skilled cosmetic surgeon who can craft your feature into looking better and making you the best you possible.

Take advantage of your consultation with your plastic surgeon and come prepared with a list of questions. This is the important part here; this is where all your research comes into play. At this point you should know almost as much as your doctor about how your surgery is performed, where the incisions are made, how long your recovery time should be and all of the gory details. You should be questioning the surgeon on his take on these options. If your doctor isn’t up to date on his knowledge you shouldn’t ignore this red flag.
