Tubal Implants: New Permanent Form Of Birth Control

For numerous years tubal ligation has been the only type of enduring birth control option for women. This operation costs close to $10,000 or more to pay for the price of anesthesia, the operating room, medicine, and surgeon. The procedure itself may take all day and the woman requires nearly six weeks to recoup.

Obviously this alternative is not something that many women prefer to choose. Yet, if they have made the hard choice to not have anymore kids they believe that in the long run it would be easiest to merely have it done. Now though they have one more selection to choose from - tubal implants.

This operation works in much the same way as the other one except that it is non surgical and might be completed within thirty minutes. The implants are small metal springs. The physician will insert them into the opening of both fallopian tubes. Over three months the skin will grow around the implants and firmly seal off the tubes. When this occurs the eggs are not able to make their way into the woman’s uterus.

In order for the woman to be authorized for this process she has to first be tested for sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s) and vaginal infections. These problems can increase any chance of a pelvic infection during the process.

During this out patient process the doctor will use an instrument to extend the cervix. He will than pass a catheter into the cervix and through the womb before it reaches the fallopian tubes and the implants have been secured.

It is important to remember that this operation is still fairly new and there can be problems that doctors are not yet aware of. For now the only side effect with tubal implants that any woman has gone through is cramping that occurred during the process. She is able to recoup almost instantly and after three months she should not have to use any other kind of contraception.
