The 20 contestants in the Weight-Loss Wars reached a milestone in their five-month contest to drop pounds and adopt healthy lifestyles.

On Thursday,Weight-Loss Wars: lots of pounds shed ‎ Articles the two teams were weighed, had their photographs retaken and learned totals of team and individual losses.

Contestants also completed a 12-minute walking drill in the Mile Bluff Medical Center parking lot to test their cardiac fitness before the trainers revealed the results.

Foods for Weight Loss

The competition, presented by the Juneau County Health Initiative of the Mile Bluff Medical Center Foundation in Mauston, is modeled after the long-running NBC television show “The Biggest Loser.”

Local contestants receive free counseling and coaching to make life changes. The competition began in May.For the next eight weeks contestants will work to keep the weight off with minimal support from coaches and teammates. The top individual winner will be announced during Women’s Night Out on Sept. 27 -- a fundraiser for the foundation to benefit women in the county. A mother and daughter who starred on the TV show will be guest speakers. The Star-Times is a sponsor of Women’s Night Out.

“The 12-week winners are chosen by the percent of weight loss,” said Kali Berkseth, Mile Bluff athletic trainer and team coach. “One leader will be determined tonight, along with the team that has lost the highest percentage of weight.”
