One type of issue that can affect this gland is a tumor. Thyroid problems of this type can include cancers -- that is, tumors which are malignant, rather than benign. A form that is benign (or can be, it may rarely be otherwise) is the thyroid adenoma. There are several types of cancers as well. One of them is anaplastic, however, this type is more rare. The most frequently found form of thyroid cancer is the papillary kind. Other types may also occur.
It is also possible for anatomical disorder to occur in this gland. One issue of this type that can take place is a goiter -- of which there are actually multiple kinds. Two of the possible forms of goiter are the endemic and diffuse ones. Another anatomical issue that might be present is a thyroglossal duct cyst.
