(In the Greek language,What is amnesia Articles amnesia means "forgetfulness.") A person with amnesia may be unable to remember his ow n name, or where he lives, or who his parents or his children are.

Sometimes amnesia is caused by an injury to the brain. Sometimes it is caused by a kind of mental disturbance. Amnesia may last only for a few hours or days, or it may last for years. There have been cases when a person was injured in the head in an accident, or became very upset, and lost his memory for a long time. For many years, doctors did not know very much about amnesia or how to treat it. They have come to understand it well only since World War I.

There are also special kinds of amnesia, in which a person forgets some things and not others. I-or instance, a person might forget how to read and write, and have to begin learning all over again. Fortunately, amnesia does not occur very often, and there is very little danger that you or anyone you know will ever have a bad case of this mental trouble.
