Sclerotherapy solution, the origin of the term Sclerotherapy, is the solution that is injected into spider veins to reduce their appearance. Sclerotherapy solution can be a simple saline solution composed of mainly hypertonic salt solution, Sotradecol or Polidocanol solutions. Because the saline solution can have a burning sensation when injected, many doctors now prefer sotradecol or polidocanol solutions because they provide better results with little to no discomfort for the patient. Suprisingly sclerotherapy is a proven procedure that has been used since the 1930s and remains popular in big cities like Boca Raton.

How is Sclerotherapy procedure performed?

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment performed by a medical doctor. If you are pregnant you will not be eligible for the procedure. If you are taking birth control you are able to have the treatment. If you have had blood clots in the past your doctor will need to approve the procedure on an individual basis.

The treatment area is cleansed with alcohol before any injections are made. Patients then lie on their back with their legs slightly elevated.  The doctor will use a fine needle to slowly insert the solution into the vein. Once the solution in injected the doctor will slowly remove the needle and apply compression to stop the flow of blood into the veins while dispersing the solitons through the veins. The solution will irritate the lining of the vein and cause it to swell. Once the vain swells it will stop the flow of blood to the vein causing it to disappear over time. The number of injections required vary from patient to patient depending on the number of veins being treated.

What is the recovery time and possible side effects of Sclerotherapy?

Following a Sclerotherapy procedure patients should be able to return to normal activities immediately. Compression bandages or socks should be worn from 1-3 weeks depending of the intensity of the procedure and individual patient recommendations. Department store support stockings will not be adequate. Patients also need to stay out of the sun for at least 2 weeks – which is often easier said than done for Boca Raton citizens.

Patients may experience bruising and discoloration, inflammation, small sores or raised red areas. In some rare occurrences, a blood clot may form that would require treatment. Patients should also avoid hot baths, whirlpools, and saunas 48 hours after having the treatment preformed.  Overall sclerotherapy is proven to be a very safe and effective treatment.

What is the cost of Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy treatment cost range depending on the doctor and the patients desired treatment area. In general sessions range between $200 - $500 each. In many instances, multiple sessions are necessary to achieve the desired outcome. Sessions should be planned 3-4 weeks apart.
