What is a dental implant?

First of all, what is a dental implant? These are screws that they are implanting in your gums. Then they are screwing teeth onto the screws. Making sure that you have teeth, where there weren’t any. The screws will keep the tooth in place, without it falling out all the time like veneers.

This is something that people are considering, that have lost a tooth, and not want to get veneers for. For some, this might be just one tooth, while for others it might be a couple of teeth that need to get dental implants.

How long will it take and is this painful?

How long will this procedure take? This is the first question that many people have. The answer depends on the number of implants that you are going to get. The more implants you are getting, the longer it is going to take. For a single tooth implant, it will take about one to two hours. The more teeth, the longer it will be.

It is a bit painful and uncomfortable at first. Just like any other surgery. But, the doctor is going to describe to you some good pain medication to ensure that your pain is under control. Some have more pain and discomfort than others. It depends on how much pain you can handle.

Preparation for the surgery

There are a couple of things that need to be done before the surgery.  You might need to rinse your mouth with a special mouthwash a couple of days before the surgery. And, you might get some antibiotics that you will need to take before you are going in for surgery.

You will also need to have someone that is driving you to the appointment and to take you back home. This is because of the drugs that you are going to get. Depending on if you are going to be locally sedated or going under anesthesia, you will get eating instructions that you need to follow. It is also important to ask all the questions you are wondering about before you are going to surgery.

What happens on the day of the surgery?

On the day of the surgery, you will get the first phase of the implant. Where the implant is getting implanted into your gums. This is where they are cutting your gums and planting the gums into your jawbone.

Within a couple of months, they will do the second phase of the implant. Where they are inserting the tooth. Again, they might need to cut the gum to place the tooth into the implant. But, sometimes this isn’t necessary.

If you are considering getting dental implants, then you might want to know as much about these implants as possible. This is why you need to make sure that you know all these things before you are considering the implants. It’s a great way to get new, permanent teeth where you might have lots of it. But, this isn’t a quick fix, it will take a couple of months to get it repaired correctly.
