Any person who is interested in becoming an audiologist and working in a hearing center,
must be trained by completing an extensive amount of clinicals. The education that is required must include training to strengthen the ability to diagnose, assess, and help educate people on how to live with any hearing issues. When any problems are detected, the hearing specialist can either provide additional help through their resources or by making a referral for the afflicted to continue their treatment with a medical doctor or specialist.
To become a licensed and practicing audiologist, one must earn an AuD degree. People who have earned ScD, PhD or almost any other doctorate degrees can become an audiologist if they also have received specific training that included identification, assessment and treatment of the different types of hearing problems.
In order to be able to see and treat patients, an audiologist must hold a license in all of the states. The workplace settings can vary, however many of them work in elementary, middle and some high schools, hospitals, ear, nose and throat practices (ENT) and government facilities.
Out of all the types of hearing loss, over 80% can be treated by an audiologist. Hearing loss that is a direct result of nerve damage is treatable. Through the use
and assistance of hearing therapy, hearing aids and listening instruments, which can all be found in a hearing center.
There are over 25 million American citizens who have some kind of problem with their hearing. Out of those 25 million people, only a small amount of them will take some kind of action and seek out answers that can be found in a hearing center. People that are hearing impaired do not always recognize that they have a problem. They may have gotten used to living with a compromised hearing
ability. Since this problem affects people from the age of birth until death, it is important to note that anyone who has any form of loss, does struggle with communication as well.
Getting diagnosed and treated as soon as possible by a specialist can help these people make the transition into living a life that is much closer to the norm and
increase their ability to effectively communicate.
Studies done in the recent years show how much the loss of one of the five senses can severely handicap a person. When it comes to hearing loss, the impact that it has on the lives of the individuals who are afflicted can be very negative. Social, personal and work relationships all suffer and create a whole host of personal issues for the individual to cope with as well.
