The RC helicopter can be categorized according to its power sources.

The nitro powered RC helicopter or glow fuel powered one is available in a range of sizes. The numbers of sizes are given according to the engine sizes. Starting from the maximum to the lowest size they are numbered 90,Flying the RC helicopter - an absorbing hobby Articles 60, 50, 30, and 15. The models with greater numbers are bigger in size and have lengthier rotator blades. Normally, the Nitro powered helicopters can be flown about 15 minutes. The height that can be flown is limited only to the visibility limit of the one who controls the RC helicopter being on the ground. Not only for the nitro RC helicopters but also for other models, this limit is normal.

The electric RC helicopter is smaller than the other types. The earlier electric models which came to exist in the 1990s were powered with 1200 mah NiCad batteries and contained brushed motors. The latest electric ones are run with Lithium polymer batteries and they are more feasible to work as well. Normally, the running time is limited to 14 minutes depending on the battery capacity. Typically, the smaller electric helicopters, mostly the earliest ones, were used indoors due to their low noise, low flying height and zero fumes emitted. The larger electric types are produced for outdoor flying. These are ideal for countries where there are strict noise regulations.

The latest small model of RC helicopter called coaxial RC electric helicopters is greatly suitable for amateurs and for those who like to fly this type of toys indoors. They are quick to respond RC signals and therefore, easily manageable. Nevertheless, due to their indoor feasibility rather than outdoor operation, they show less friendliness with forward signals. They are friendlier with climbing RC controlling. The radio control small-pitch helicopters mostly consists of 4-channel operation namely, elevator, throttle, rudder and aileron. Nonetheless, there are two-channel models such as micro helicopters as well.

In addition, there are 5 to 6 channels RC helicopters which are called collective-pitch helicopters. The channels of them consist of collective pitch, throttle, aileron, elevator, rudder and gyro. To make the operation easier, some models have combined channels such as throttle/rudder. Most models of these types are with joysticks maneuverability which enables the controllers to make horizontal and vertical operations. The RC helicopter usually made of plastic, aluminum, carbon fiber or glass-mixed plastic. The blades are mostly made of wood, carbon fiber or fiber glass. Mostly the RC helicopter is available as kits and the user has to assemble them, which is not a difficult task.
