Plastic beads and glass are the leading items stored in many bead shops both locally and on the internet, and they are also the most commonly bought. Both materials have their own pros and cons and particular properties with regards to how they are used in making beaded jewelry.

The beads are made from various types of material. This material can be natural like bone, ivory, seeds, wood and inorganic substances like different kinds of malleable metals. The second type of material is synthetic comprising of ceramics and glass. These were prone to high wear and tear. The advent of plastic has enabled the mass production of beads, making it less expensive than ever before.

Plastic beads are produced by the synthesizing several components to produce a substance that can be shaped into desired form. These substances are commonly carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, chlorine and sulphur. These materials are mostly those that have a high molecular weight to enable them to bond easily. Another term for plastic is polymer substances.

 The plastic beads are prepared in two ways for jewelry. The first method is called melting and fusing. The beads are placed on design making plastic peg boards. The beads of various colours are put on the peg board and melted into designs. The second method is to string the beads into various designs of jewelry producing necklaces, ear rings, wrist bands and several other types of ornamental items. The beads used in the first method are called fusible. These are available in different shining colours. The peg boards used for placing beads to form designs also come in different shapes and sizes.

Plastic beads are the most popular items in beading because these are comparatively low priced items. These beads are available in a variety of colours, sizes and shapes. The size of the central hole also differs to facilitate different kinds of material to be used for stringing them together. The commonest form of the plastic beads is round with scores of primary, secondary and mixed colours. Beads of mixed multi-faceted variety are used for making craft work for kids. Clear faceted beads are used for making jewelry.

 Acrylic beads are used for decorative purpose and jewelry projects. Pony beads are a variety of acrylics used for fun activities by kids. There are multi-colour faceted beds used for making jewelry designs like necklaces, wrist bands etc. A lot of other beads in the market are metallic finish beads, pearl beads, star–shaped beads, crafting beads, multi-colour icon beads, bicones and round, monochrome pony beads, plastic cross beads, AB finish bicones, tear drop beads, cone beads, plastic pellet beads, bicones spacers, no hole plastic imitation pearl beads, small hole beads, peacock acrylic flower beads etc. Most are available on line and in retail and wholesale packs also.
