Keywords are not something to be ignored. Not if you want hungry targeted traffic to your website.

If you think they are just some words that don’t carry a lot of weight, then you need to realize that keywords, and proper keyword selection is vitally important to your online marketing efforts.

Selecting the correct keywords will translate into an increase in targeted traffic to your website.  Selecting the wrong keywords, or not paying any attention to keywords at all, will cause your website to die a slow death of little or no traffic.

The difficulty most people face is how to do proper keyword research, so that they select the most effective keywords.

A lot of people will just select keywords off the top of their head.  This can be quite dangerous as not every one thinks, and therefore searches the same way.  You’d be surprised at how many different ways, and using different search terms, people search for the same thing. 

Speaking of ‘search terms’, online marketers need to realize that they need to match up their keywords, with the ‘search terms’ of people who are looking for what is being marketed.   The search engines are the matchmakers between online marketers, and people searching on the internet.  They match the search terms with keywords.

Keywords also play a part in a web page’s page rank.  The page rank is the ranking, or grade that Google gives to a website.  Its an indicator of how important Google thinks a website, or web page is.

Keywords also help to determine a website’s relevancy.  The website’s keywords need to be congruent with the content on that page.  If not the search engines will not like it.

Keywords are also important to help filter a website’s visitors.  By that I mean keywords help to get more targeted visitors to a website.  People looking more specifically for what that website has to offer.

Lets suppose you have a website about washing machine repairs.  You have some free information, tips, maintenance procedures, an ebook for sale, and some videos for sale.

Which would your prefer to have for visitors?  People who searched for ‘appliances’, or people who searched for ‘washing machine repair tips’?  So you want to target the keyword ‘washing machine repair tips’, and not ‘appliances’. Using the correct keywords will get you the more targeted visitors.  And those are the best kind.

Also, using more specific keywords helps to concentrate your marketing efforts.  If you’ve selected a group of keywords to target, then it is best to stick to those keywords, and not branch out into more distracting areas. 

So you can see that researching, selecting, and then making use of the correct keywords for your website will do wonders for generating traffic, and targeted traffic at that.  And who would not like more targeted traffic.
