When an individual or family embarks on an adventure of long distance moving, they will have to plan for relocating their pets, too. We all love our pets! They are like our family members or best friends. Dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, lizards, snakes and other members of the animal kingdom enrich our lives. Check out the new home’s ordinances: Some HOA’s and apartment or condo managers have rules about animals that must be followed. Check out all the rules before signing a lease or purchase agreement in order to be aware of regulations about furry and feathered friends. HOA’s associations may have rules about the number and breed of pets a family may keep on the property. This is to eliminate troublesome kennels and puppy farms in urban or suburban neighborhoods. While it may seem like a green idea to bring a goat to keep down the weeds, it would be wise to check out the rules of the HOA first.

Travel by automobile: If the clan is traveling to their new address in their auto, pets may just ride along. This may be a wonderful plan for moving Fluffy and Rover, but doing a practice run cruising in the car ahead of time will be a wise step. Animals that get carsick or anxious might need a tranquilizer for the lengthy journey. Call the vet to inquire about the possibilities. Everyone will be happier if the animals are relaxed on the trip.

Will the hotel allow pets? Some hotels and motels will allow a small dog into the room overnight for a fee. It’s worth checking into online ahead of time. Don’t wait to be stuck in no-man’s-land to discover there’s no place to sleep.

Airplane travel: Airlines will also transport pets for an extra baggage fee. Be sure to pack Fido’s and Spot’s belongings: Leashes, treats, food items, water dishes, and rawhide chew toys will all make everyone more comfortable. Medications from the vet and plastic dog poo bags are essential items, too.

Give extra attention before, during and after the trip: Pet them, take them on walks, talk to them and hold them so that the experience is more comfortable for all concerned.

Check the cultural norms about animals if moving abroad: Not every nation is as pet-friendly as the U.S. It would be wise to check the cultural norms to make sure your beloved pets will be welcome in the new land.
