Once winter comes around, all we really want to do is stay in our beds the whole day and snuggle in a comforter. A down comforter is particularly soft and nice to touch but there are so many variants that a person should be familiar with the categories in order to be able to select the most appropriate one. Most assume that down is down that is it, but in fact there are several types and finding the right product can be tricky. Down is a natural material that comes from goose feathers. When they are used as filling for pillows and comforters, the effect is excellent with impeccable softness and an insulating property that is second to none. However, there have been recent efforts to manufacture synthetic down for a wide range of applications. These may be suitable for camping and other technical usage but they are poor substitutes to the real thing when it comes to beddings. Buyers should ensure that they are buying nothing but 100% goose down and the product must contain this label. Those which don't have this tag are likely to be of inferior quality and should not be bothered with. Find one that has natural materials for the best experience.
Now that we have discussed the filling, let's move on to the soft fabric container. The softness of natural down can only be appreciated if the fabric allows it to be. For instance, filling burlap with down won't do any good as the roughness of the surface will ruin the whole thing. The softness of the exterior must match the interior so purchase one with a superior fabric. One way to ensure this is to look at the thread count. The higher the thread count, the silkier the texture will be. Most comforters will state a 300 count and it is best not to go below this standard. Hotels will typically stock up on 400-count comforters, with 5-star hotels going much higher. 
Now that you have mastered the numbers regarding goose down percentage and thread count, it's time to move on to another criterion. One cannot purchase a comforter without considering the design. Find one that will blend well with the room interiors. Better yet, go for a white comforter and use a beautiful comforter cover on top of it.
