Termites, Bed Bugs, and Roaches: 3 Annoying Pests You Want to Keep Away from your Home

These are the kind of pests that are concerned with termites, bed bugs, and cockroaches. These three annoying pests are mostly the common pests that you will see in your home and where you want to protect your home from these pests.

As far as invasive pests are concerned, termites, bed bugs, and cockroaches are out of the question. These three annoying pests come on top of the list of creatures that you want to protect your home from. Why? First, termites are infamous for damaging the wooden structures on your property. Second, bed bugs bite and irritate your skin. Third, roaches are disgustingly filthy and are known contaminators and carriers of diseases and viruses.

Simply, these pests offer nothing good but harm. It is no wonder why most people simply want to eradicate these pests and keep them away from our homes as much as possible. Here is a checklist of things you need to know about termites, bed bugs, and cockroaches and what you can do to safeguard your home from these pests.

Termites

Nothing beats termites when it comes to damaging your home’s wooden structures. Termites are attracted to wood and dead trees because they survive by consuming cellulose found in a plant’s cell walls. So they infest and feed on wooden—wooden furniture, wooden floors, and wooden walls. As a result, your home will suffer from structural damage. Destroying wooden structures is a quick and easy job for termites for they stay awake straight for 24 hours. They cause billions of dollars worth of structural damage every year in the US. In addition to these facts, some termite species do not only feed on wood but also on materials like pipes, insulation, books, etc. In case of heavy infestation, you really need to avail of advanced termite control from the hands of experts. Termite control entails the use of specialized tools such as spray tanks, metal rods, and masonry drills and the application of termiticide, a pesticide specially made to eliminate termites. In other words, termite control is something to be left in the hands of professionals.

Bed Bugs

These annoying crawlies may not be carriers of diseases but they can be a big nuisance once they invade your home. These ectoparasites increase their numbers so fast without getting noticed. Once you are bitten by bed bugs, you will suffer from severely itchy bed bug bites that come in clusters of 3 to 5 bite marks either in straight or zigzag patterns. Bug bites may lead to serious skin infection and allergic reactions and that’s where the problem comes in. These tiny nocturnal critters can be hard to detect not only because of their size but also because these blood-sucking pests normally take action at night when their prey is fast asleep. Vacuum cleaning is one basic step to suck these creatures out of their hiding places (i.e. linens, curtains, beddings, bookshelves (particularly the ones near the bed), drawers, and wardrobe) typically where there are cracks and crevices. Another remedy is by using hot water when washing beddings and by steam cleaning since bed bugs will not survive in an extremely hot atmosphere. Aside from applying heat, the cold technique is also an effective bed bug removal method. Bed bugs also have zero tolerance to a very cold environment. Hence, freezing materials like linens and beddings infested by bed bugs for a minimum of 24 hours definitely works in removing the bugs. Other remedies include sprinkling diatomaceous earth, and in worst-case scenarios, applying heat treatment and chemical treatment.

Cockroaches

Roaches are among the worst pests you want to see dwelling inside your home. They are not only dirty and smelly; they also carry harmful bacteria and transmit diseases to humans. They love the humid areas of your home and infest zones where food debris is found. They traverse across damp sites including pipes, trash cans, and sewers (eww!), and accumulate an unimaginable number of germs along the way. Roaches are truly a threat to human health especially when they touch your food, food counters, and kitchen utensils. Homeowners must therefore make sure not to attract these pests into your household by sealing all cracks, holes, and other possible entry points. Moreover, observing proper hygiene and proper waste disposal keeps these pests at bay.
