The growth of mold,Tips To Prevent Mold Growth Inside A Home Articles especially black mold inside a home can cause health problems for the residents. With disclosure laws, an owner is required to tell potential buyers of the mold problem. Thus, mold can also destroy the value of one's biggest financial investment. There are steps homeowners can take to reduce the chances of spores taking root inside a home.

Water leaks and spills should be cleaned immediately. Mold spores are found in the air naturally. They float around, seeking a moist place where they can grow. If the homeowner acts quickly and has the area dry within 24-48 hours after the spill, the spores usually do not grow.

The ground surrounding the foundation of a home should slope away from the home. This ensures the water drains away from the structure. In homes with basements, the sloping ground is a key to keeping the area dry.

As the air conditioning cools the home it naturally dehumidifies the air, which makes it more difficult for mold to grow. However, the water from the air drips into a pan to be drained away. These pans and drain lines should be kept clean and unobstructed to prevent the growth of mold in the HVAC system.

When water condenses on pipes, windows or walls, the humidity in the home is too high. Occupants should act quickly to dry the surface and reduce the humidity in the house. Many air conditioning units have a dehumidify cycle that can remove excess moisture without changing room temperature. Portable dehumidifiers can also help.

The warm moist air should be vented outside the home when cooking, showering or drying clothes. If a moisture build up is noticed when the dryer is operating, check the vent hose and outlet for a blockage due to lint. Use kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans when cooking or bathing.

Both supply and drain pipes can create a cold surface where moisture condenses. Insulate such pipes so the air has less contact with cold surfaces to prevent drips that can provide moisture for mold growth. Repair any leaks from pipes as soon as they are discovered.

A leaking roof can cause mold to grow in the attic and on the ceilings of the house. If the roof is in poor shape, it should be replaced. Eliminating the source of moisture is the only way to prevent mold from growing. A roofing contractor can provide estimates to make the necessary repairs to stop leaks in the home.
