Air Conditioning: Useful Tips for Preventing Unit Breakdown

Read this guide if you want to prevent an air conditioning system breakdown. Your unit requires proper maintenance to keep it running smoothly.

Your air conditioning system, just like your vehicle, requires proper maintenance to keep it in good working order. There are many things that you can do to make sure your air conditioning equipment runs problem free. In the blistering months of summer, the last thing you need is a broken A/C unit! These six tips will help you prevent a system breakdown.

Keep the Outside Coils Clean

By keeping the outside coils clean, you are preventing buildup of pollen, dirt, dust, and debris. You can improve the efficiency of your air conditioning unit by running a vacuum over the coils. You can also use a brush or foaming coil cleaner to clean them.

Install a Ceiling Fan

Use other methods to keep your house cool. You can increase air circulation by installing a ceiling fan. You can also block out the heat from the sun with dark blinds and drapes. Don't put your air conditioner next to heat-producing appliances such as a kitchen stove.

Keep Items Away from Vents

Keep household items away from the vents of your air conditioning units. This will allow the cold air to get into the rooms and create better circulation. If you follow this tip, your air conditioners won't have to work as hard.

Change the AC Filter

Change the air conditioner filter every 30 days, even if the manufacturer's instructions recommend changing it every 3 months. Air conditioner filters clog quickly with hair, dust, dirt, and debris. When this happens, cold air cannot flow freely though the filter. This buildup can increase the amount of your monthly utility bills.

Wrap the Ducts with Insulation

Seal the space around your window AC unit to prevent cold air from escaping. Examine your air ducts for gaps. Wrap the air ducts with insulation and tape the joints. If your air ducts are not insulated, your air conditioning equipment will waste more cool air than it delivers.

Schedule an AC Inspection

Most air conditioners have a lifetime of 13 years or less. As your unit gets older, it may get noisier and require repairs more often. If your equipment is over five years old, you should have an air conditioner repair technician inspect your system.

Have your equipment serviced regularly. Minor repairs and tune-ups will extend the life of your air conditioner. Just make sure you hire a reliable service technician: one who is licensed, insured, and experienced. Whether you own a home, office complex, restaurant, or retail storeHealth Fitness Articles, AC repair technicians are only a phone call away. Follow these tips if you don't want to suffer from a blistering heat wave!
