They can be very dark and lined to keep most of the light out, or light and sheer to let the light in. Normally they are darker in the formal areas and lighter in the more casual areas. You can buy them already made at most of the better department stores and retail stores. They will cost considerably less this way, but your choices of materials and colors may be limited by the amount of stock the store has on hand.

You will have more choices and considerably less cost if you make them yourself. Even if you don't know how to sew, you can find instructions on how to make them online and at libraries.

So really you have several options to consider when choosing roman blinds. The cost, the material, the time it will take to have them made versus buying them ready made are all things to think about when buying them. Look your rooms over, decide what color and what kind of material you want. Then you will be ready to decide if you want them made professionally or if you want to buy them at a store. Or if you are really brave, if you want to try to make them yourself.

However you get them, your rooms will look elegant and classy with roman shades in them. Much better than regular drapes or blinds.
