Bed Bugs Control and Management Tips

Bed bugs control and management techniques should be implemented as soon as they are discovered. The reason for this is the rapid infestation and population of these pests which may become out of control when left unattended. While the harm that they bring is composed of itchy bumps and annoyance, many instances of full blown infestations can be alarming. These little insects are visible with the naked eye most of the time so it is basically easy to search them out if the home owner suspects he or she has an infestation.

Signs of Infestation

One aspect of bed bugs control and management is actually the active hunt for them if one suspects that they are present. Most of the time, these pests can be found in the bedroom. The reason behind this is that, whether we like it or not, this is the part of the home where we spend most of our time inactively, by sleeping. When we are asleep or inactive, these little parasites can suck whatever they need from us. Folds and creases of the actual mattress and bed base are possible places where they can be found. The linings of the base and where the seams meet are popular places where they can hide since they like the dark. Some manifestations of these pests include black or dark spots about the size of a period accompanied by rusty looking spots. Large adults are highly visible and so are their eggs and feces. The black spots are their feces and the rusty looking stains are blood from the insects themselves if or when they are squashed as the human moves in sleep. Bites from them are usually in a group, either a linear or circular pattern. These can be very itchy and bothersome.

Management

Bed bugs control and management consist of recognizing the need to get rid of them. Once their presence has been established, the area where they are should be cleaned well. Usually, large infestations may require the disposal of the bed sheets and other fabric that may be in that room. The bed, the base and the mattress will need to be exposed to the hot sun. In many cases, sun exposure should be for a few days. Some experts recommend wrapping up the mattress in a plastic covering to inhibit the life of the pests. Without food, they will die within the plastic covering. It is important that the covering have no holes where they could escape for this technique to be successful. The bed sheets and other coverings should also be washed in hot water for an extended amount of time to ensure the demise of the little critters.

There are times when household bed bugs control and management techniques may not be successful. These are the times when the experts should be called in. Full blown infestations can be dangerous and may need to have the influence and control of experts. Fumigation may be the worst case scenario for many homes that are infested.
