Blinds? Or Curtains?

Dressing your window can be a bit confusing at times due to the large amount of choices available. For example, should you go for blinds? Or curtains? These kind of choices can be better decided once you consider three things.

Dressing your window can be a bit confusing at times due to the large amount of choices available. For example, should you go for blinds? Or curtains? These kind of choices can be better decided once you consider three things.

 

One, what is the purpose of the room? For example, the window over the kitchen sink is an example of a window where curtains are better used. Here, you would want to have access to natural light most of the time. On the other hand, bedroom windows are better dressed with blinds since they are very effective at blocking outside lighting sources. That means you can sleep better whenever you want to. All you have to do is to draw down the blinds.

 

Two, what is the décor of the space? You will naturally want the blinds or curtains to fit in whatever design you have for the room. For example, older homes with tall ceilings and antique furniture would do much better with heavy draperies and window shades. Bungalows, however, with shorter ceilings and windows would probably look better with blinds giving the room an airy feeling and at the same time make it look bigger.

 

Third, how do you really want your window to look like? Some people don't really care about how their windows look like. They just want it to function as, well, windows. If this is you, then blinds are your best bet. On the other hand, if you want to have your window show some color, then use curtains.

 

Of course, as with almost everything in life, there is always a chance to compromise. Why not combine the best of both worlds. Try roman shades. Typical roman shades operate a bit like blinds, in that you may raise or lower it with a cord system. The cool thing about roman shades is that they can be made with a design or a picture that is revealed once the shade is lowered. Now isn't that great? You can put your favorite picture or painting on the shade. So when you raise the shade up, you see the world outside. When you pull it down, you've got your favorite picture painting to look at. And at night, the painted shades will look great when seen from the outside. Pretty cool huh.
