There may be moths and beetles or pet fur and dust mites that would have settled into unreachable corners. Be careful to check the room for them during every cleaning session. Locate all the moths and beetles too. All this is important if some family members have allergies.

As regards the rancid smell that takes over carpets at times because of food and animal vomit, use soda water. Bicarbonate of soda can be rubbed into the affected area while soda water/mineral water can help prevent the solid matter from settling into the depths of the carpet. Taking care of carpets doesn't mean that you forget the floor around it. Grease on the floor can be removed with cornflour but for grime and dirt you can use bicarbonate of soda. Let it settle for at least half and hour before vacuuming it all away.

Removing was stains that may have been caused by candles is easy too. First you need to scrape off as much as possible then use a blotting paper or tissue. Cover as much as possible and then hold down a hot iron. No alkaline products like laundry detergents should be used on wool carpets as they will seriously damage the fiber.

You can use white wine to get rid of red-wine stains. Mop the white wine and let it settle into the carpet for ten minutes before wiping the area with a piece of soft cloth. You can also dip the cloth in warm water before wiping the affected area on the carpet.

Apart from cleaning and maintaining your carpet directly do keep shifting heavy furniture occasionally to avoid any heavy embedding marks or holes developing into the carpet.
