Brick cladding was a method that was commonly used in residential homes in the 1960s and has been used periodically since then. Brick cladding can also be referred to as brick veneer or fake brick. It is possible to perform cladding removal with a little knowledge and some hard work.

Cladding removal can be a very dusty job so you will firstly need to cover yourself in appropriate safety clothing and equipment. There are bound to be bits of flying mortar and brick particle debris so ensure you are wearing safety goggles and if you have asthma then a respirator is a good idea.  Specialist bricking gloves with a flock lining are also suitable for removing brick cladding.

You will need a diamond chip grinder to cut the edges of the brick cladded wall. It is a good idea to trace the boundaries with chalk first. If you are using the grinder for a long period of time you may need someone with you to help steady you. You should never use a grinder above chest height and if you find that it is necessary to grind brick veneer from a higher height then use a ladder or scaffolding.  Once this is done use a chisel to remove the first brick cladded veneer. You may find that the first brick may be difficult to remove but once you have upset the mortar you should find that it becomes easier to remove the rest of the bricks. Once you have loosened the mortar you will need a sledge hammer to crack the bricks off the wall. You may find chicken wire behind the bricks and the chicken wire may have dried mortar stuck to it so try and loosen this with the sledge hammer as you are removing the bricks.

Use a wire cutter to cut the chicken wire into square than can easily be pulled off the wall and remove any small bits of mortar that may become lodged in between the wire when the brick cladding was applied. Once the chicken wire has been removed use a small chisel to tap off the mortar that is left on the wall. If the walls are wooden make sure you take care not to chisel away the wood.
