Check Your Insulation

One of the best energy saving tips is to check out your insulation. Get up in the attic, get behind the walls, and crawl into your crawlspace. leave no stone unturned. If your insulation is old and worn, you're losing tons of energy daily by having to run your AC or heater harder. Installing new insulation or repairing the old will help keep the warmth in, and it will save you money.

Doing The Laundry

When doing laundry, switch to cold water. You'll be amazed at the amount you'll save. For most washing machines, well over 85% of the cost of running it is for heating the water. Running loads cold will save you money and help save the environment. Also, be sure to use full loads when washing. This will help you cut down even more.

Unplug Chargers

Most people don't know that when they've got their phone or iPod chargers plugged in, they're sucking electricity from the walls for no good purpose whatsoever. It may be just habit to leave them plugged in, but it's a habit you've got to break. Unplug all chargers when they're not being used. Just because they're not plugged into the device doesn't mean they aren't draining voltage!

Hit The Lights

Change your incandescent bulbs to fluorescent lights in the areas where you use them most. This will save a considerable amount of your lighting bill. You don't have to replace each tiny bulb, but change the big ones that are used every day. Always also remember to turn off any and all lights when they aren't in use.

Adjust The Thermostat

Turn the thermostat down to 120 degrees. If you use a dishwasher, you should keep it at 140 degrees. Just a tiny bit will save a lot. You should also turn down the heat at night in the winter time. Just throw another blanket on the bed and cuddle deeper.

Keep It Clean

Make sure your furnace filters are clean and in good shape. Also, be sure the coils in your refrigerator are clean. Do some routine cleaning on all vents as well. Lots of energy is lost due to obstructions in these devices.
