Before you head out to the store to purchase those garage organization tools be sure to take a trip out to that area of the home! You don’t want to have to make multiple trips to the store and still not have the right materials. Here are a few tips to make sure you pick up everything that you will need the first time.

Choosing Containers

When you first take on garage organization you probably think that it is going to take you forever! However you must remember that most people don’t keep everything they find hidden inside. Most of the time you will have a pile of items that can be added to the next yard sale,Garage Organization Tools Articles donated to a local facility, or just thrown out completely. This is one reason why you don’t want to run out and buy containers without really getting in there and taking a look. Some things just aren’t going to stick around.

If you can, go through and group similar items together. For example, you may want to place all of your harvest and Halloween decorations together. This way you can measure everything and find a bin that will be able to contain everything that you have. You can also group things like Christmas lights and decorations, sporting equipment, seasonal clothing, and even extra food or home supplies that you keep out there.

Shelves

If you already have shelves you can easily begin to place containers in the right location and get things off the floor. If you don’t have shelves you want to look into either purchasing or building some. Garage organization can happen vertically, saving you floor space and making the area look less cluttered. Measure the wall space that you have and keep track of how much room you will need to set them up. If you are planning to buy already made units, look for products that have adjustable shelves. This will help with finding the right spot for every shape and size of object you need to store.

Using the Wall Space

If you want to add even more space to the walls you may want to look into pegboard. This will make it easy to hang up some of your tools, your bike, and maybe even some of your camping equipment. This will once again get everything up off the floor and give you more space for parking or working.

Labeling Supplies

One of the keys to garage organization is making sure that everything is properly labeled. Even if you purchase closed containers of different colors you want to know just what is inside. Choose permanent markers with a bold tip for larger spaces. You may want to write on masking tape or even larger envelope labels; just be sure to find something that works well for your containers.
