The gutters around your home perform an important job.  If you do not clean them properly,Gutter Cleaning Tips for the Homeowner Articles then they will not be able to protect your foundation.  Here are a few tips for those looking to clean their gutters out themselves.

First and foremost you will need to be careful when cleaning out your gutters.  Make sure the ladder is placed securely on the ground.  If you have anyone available to help then they can secure the ladder while you are on it.

Whatever you do, avoid leaning the ladder against your gutters since doing so will likely cause damage to them.  If they break, then you may be thrown off balance and get yourself hurt.  While you are on the ladder do not overreach to your left or right.  Move the ladder instead of forcing yourself to reach farther.

You will have an easier time cleaning your gutters if you have the necessary tools on hand.  First, make sure your water hose is long enough to handle the job.  It should also have a sprayer attached so you can turn the water flow on and off at will.  Other potentially useful items include a bag or bucket, scoop or trowel, and a plumber's snake.

Most homeowners should try to clean their gutters at least twice a year.  Debris will certainly accumulate in them over time.  This is especially the case if there are a lot of trees in your yard overhanging the gutters.  During the autumn months you will need to get the falling leaves out of there.  If you live in an area with frequent storms, then consider cleaning your gutters out more than twice a year to ensure they keep functioning correctly.

You can use the scoop to remove debris from your gutters if you do not want to get your hands messy.  The hose can be used to rinse away smaller debris.  Just do not try to rinse too much debris through your gutters or the downspout may become clogged.

If the downspout gets clogged, then the plumber's snake will come in handy.  Starting at the bottom, work the snake up until you have loosened the obstruction.  Some clogs can be extremely difficult to remove no matter what you do.  In that case, you may be forced to partially disassemble the downspout to correct the problem.

These are a few tips for cleaning your gutters.  Stay safe while handling this home maintenance project.
