Pliers are great at holding on to wires, cutting them and also bending them to conform to shape. Screwdrivers are great for tightening screws which may have loosened due to frequent use such as the handles of pots and pans. They are also great at opening and closing battery ports for devices and toys which may need a fresh set of batteries. The use of a hammer is varied from the basic hammering of the nail to cracking open crab legs and nuts.

A vise grip and wrench work well with plumbing repairs as well as tightening and loosening nuts and bolts. The vise grip can also hold items which need a stable and steady grip. The handyman uses the tape measure to get the actual length, width and measurement of items which may need to be replaced. It can also measure the length of other household things. The drill and drill bits are used to make holes in the house and other household items.

Materials

The basic materials that are needed in any house include several sizes of nails, screws, nuts and bolts. These come in handy for odd jobs as well as instances when the screws, nails, nuts and bolts of household items disappear or are worn out. Wires, both metal and electrical are also some of the staples necessary to keep a household running.
