There can be a few indicators that your air conditioning may be going out including failure to turn on,Is it time for an ac replacement Articles water pooling on the floor by the unit or it makes odd noises or it simply doesn’t run cool air anymore. It may be time to replace your non working unit and get a new one.
Before you assume you’re looking at an ac replacement though it is probably well worth the cost to have a licensed HVAC technician look at the unit and find what is wrong with it. It may be a simple repair such as replacing the compressor or it may be something more expensive and the cost to replace the unit becomes more feasible than fixing it.
When shopping for a unit you want to get the appropriate size for your room area. Many people simply shop by price and try to buy the biggest unit they can afford. This is a costly mistake because your air conditioning unit should be sized for the room it will be cooling. Air conditioning works by removing moisture from the air and cooling the room. A unit that is too large for the room will constantly be shutting off and turning back on, never quite making the room cool and comfortable since it is not working efficiently and since it can’t get the moisture out the air the room will actually feel wet and uncomfortable. A unit that is sized to small for the room will not work to make the room cool either and will do little for the comfort level of the room’s occupants.
In order to figure out what size you need you will look at the British thermal units or BTU’s of the air conditioner unit. Calculate the BTU size you will need by calculating the width of the room by the length of the room and then check the BTU guidelines generally located on the unit’s box. A room that is 100 to 250 square feet will need a 5,000 BTU unit while a larger room such as a 550 to 875 square foot room will require a unit that is 1,100 to 1,500 BTU’s.
If you can only afford one ac replacement unit you should consider your habits and comfort level when you are trying to decide where to place it. Many people can’t sleep well if they are hot and will place the unit in the bedroom area. However for people who can’t sleep too cool this is a poor placement option.
When you are trying to decide where to place your ac replacement unit, ask yourself how much time will be spent in the main areas of the house such as the living room and how many people would benefit from a placement in the main living area as opposed to a bedroom. Once you know where you want your unit to go you can figure out what size of unit you will need that will best suite your needs.
