With the increase of property prices more and more homeowners are turning to loft conversions to solve the problem of creating extra living space.  Loft conversions have been proven to be a significant investment and although they can cost upwards of £20,000 in the majority of cases they add more value to the property than this initial cost.

It is a good idea to try to get your loft conversion done over the summer months as building the shell of a loft conversion can take anything from four weeks to several months to complete and can be affected by bad weather.  You will also need to find alternative storage space for the items you currently store in your loft.  You may be surprised by the amount of stuff you have accumulated over the years,Loft Conversions for home improvement Articles as the saying goes, out of sight out of mind!

A project of this size will need to be done by reliable contractors so you will need to do your research and find a building firm that specializes in loft conversions.  Make sure you get at least three separate quotes.  It is also a good idea to go and view work the building firm has completed previously so you can get an idea of what your finished loft will look like.  While you are viewing their work you should ask the homeowner for a reference.  Once you have chosen your building contractor go over their quote with a fine tooth comb so you are fully aware of what you are getting for your money.

Also check with a qualified heating engineer whether your existing boiler will be able to cope with the extra strain on the system caused by new radiators.  If you are having an en-suite bathroom installed you may need a pump that can make a fair amount of noise.  You will need to ensure the location of this pump will not cause noise nuisance.  Essential fittings are smoke detectors and all doors must be fire resistant and self-closing.  A roof light is also a must as it will provide a means of escape in case of fire.
