Measuring for a replacement window seems pretty easy,Ordering Your Replacement Window - Measuring The Rough Opening Articles doesn't it? Here's what you do: You take out the old window, measure its height and width, and there you go. Take these measurements to the hardware store and shop for windows. Everything's ready to go!

Actually, hardware stores very rarely have every size lying around. That means they might have to special order it. So, you're windowless until the new one comes! Not only that, what if you goofed a little on the numbers? You'll end up with windows that are too big for the openings.

To avoid any of these problems, let's look at a better way to measure for a replacement window. This technique uses measures the "rough opening." By figuring out this, you can get exactly the right size that you need.

Top To Bottom

First, we want to measure it from top to bottom. You should measure it at three different points. This is because there is usually some variation. By just measuring in one place, you're not going to get an idea of the rough opening size.

Let's say that your measurements differ by a quarter of an inch. This is fairly common. When you order your replacement window, you're going to use the smallest measurement as the correct amount. The reason is that if you order windows that are slightly small, you can always add wood to fill in the space. If you get ones that are too big, good luck fitting them in there!

You should also take into account the drywall at the top and the sill. Add this extra width to your measurement. Often, the folks you buy your windows from can make this calculation for you.

Side To Side

Again, measure in three different spots. Take one measurement at the top, one in the middle and one at the bottom. You'll want to do this because there will usually be some difference and you want to pick the smallest size. The variation could be anywhere from a quarter to a half an inch or so.

For the side to side measurement, you'll need to add an inch or so for the sheet rock or drywall. As we mentioned before, the dealers can help you do this as well.

Order The Same Windows

One very easy way to get a replacement window is to simply order the same one from the manufacturer. On the edge somewhere you can usually find the manufacturer's name and the specs. This is a great way to get the perfect size especially if the windows are the originals that were built into the house. Usually when a house is built, the rough openings are made to fit the size of the windows. They order the windows first.

You can also economize on your window replacement by just buying replacement parts. You can order them directly from the manufacturer or go through a local dealer. This is a great way to get all the benefits of new windows without spending all the cash.
