Pest Control: The Methods Used To Kill Undesirables

Pest control is something nearly everyone needs to be concerned with. Eventually, you’re going to have a bug problem of some kind. Whether it be from spiders, termites, ants, or something else entirely, you’re going to need a method to cleanse your house of these unwanted life forms. There are no shortage of companies willing to do the job, but if you want to be a more active participant in getting rid of your insect issue, you might as well learn about the various methods typically employed to rid a home of undesirables.

Biological
Biological pest control is when the problem is attacked using nature’s own defense mechanisms. For instance, if you have an ant problem, you might release an anteater into the home. While that particular example would be highly unusual, others are used on a relatively common basis. Taking advantage of the predator/prey system isn’t the only way to use biology against the home’s enemies. Some companies release natural bacteria into the atmosphere, which are known to kill off the insects.

Environment Control
One of the best ways to practice safe pest control is to eliminate the breeding area for the particular type of home invader you’re dealing with. With mosquitoes, as an example, standing water is the biggest threat. If there is standing water anywhere in or around your home, mosquitoes will almost certainly find a way to breed there. But the same is true for other pests and their preferred breeding ground. Taking it out of the equation won’t get rid of the living ones, but it can help ensure that they are the last generation you’ll have to deal with.

Poisons and Chemicals
While these have fallen somewhat out of favor in recent years due to increased concerns about dangers to pets and the environment, there are still few solutions as effective as pest control poisons and chemicals. These are usually sprayed along the baseboards of the home, into cracks and crevices, and anywhere where insects and other unwanted guests have been known to hide. If you choose to go this route, it is very important that you make sure to use the products in a way that is safe for your pets, children, and yourself.

Traps
For larger vermin and rodents, traps are the usual way to eliminate the problem. There are humane traps and those intended to kill the interlopers. It’s up to you and the pest control company you call which method you prefer to use. Humane traps certainly speak to those who believe in animal rights, even at the pest level, but many homeowners prefer the finality of a killing trap.
