Buying a new carpet is not exactly inexpensive.  That is one reason you should try to make yours last as long as possible.  It will definitely help prolong the life of your carpet if you take steps to keep it clean.

Vacuuming helps considerably.  Every day that people walk over the carpet,Prolong the Life of your Carpet Life by Keeping it Clean Articles more and more dirt is introduced.  As people keep walking over these areas, the dirt will become embedded even deeper.  The more you vacuum, the less dirt there will be to get deep down inside your carpet.  With this in mind, you should vacuum areas receiving the most traffic every day or two.  It would significantly prolong the life of your carpet if you vacuumed the whole surface once every week.

You want to keep dirt from getting on the carpet in the first place though.  Needless to say, most of it will be tracked in from outside.  Therefore, place a welcome mat at your front door and make sure to tell everyone in the household to wipe their feet before they come inside.  You should even think about asking them to take their shoes off before walking on the carpet.

It will also be necessary to avoid spilling any type of liquid or other substance on the carpet.  Some of them are notoriously difficult to get out.  If you do get a stain however, work to get it out immediately.  The longer you put off dealing with a stain, the harder it will be for you to get it out.

Vacuuming does not remove all of the dirt in your carpet.  You may notice that even with frequent vacuuming, certain areas will look particularly dingy.  Buying a steam machine for your carpet will help avoid this problem.

Whenever you notice fibers coming loose in your carpet, deal with them immediately too.  If you leave them as they are, they will slowly unwind and become a bigger problem.  Use a pair of sharp scissors to snip away snags in your carpet.

No amount of vacuuming or maintenance of your carpet will help it last longer than calling a professional carpet cleaner to your home.  They will have the right equipment to do the job properly.  More importantly, they will have chemicals to clean your carpet more effectively than you can.

Trying to use some of these chemicals yourself can cause a lot of damage to your carpet.  Consider calling in a professional every year or two to help prolong the life of your carpet.
