Pest control is something homeowners should pay attention to throughout the year.  It becomes even more important just before winter though.  This is the time when pests will try to escape the cold weather.  Here are some of the things you will need to do.

First and foremost,Ramp up Your Pest Control Effort Before Winter Hits Articles you should make sure there are no openings pests can use to enter your home.  Exterior doors should have weather stripping installed.  They can use stove and dryer vents to enter your home too, so they should be covered by hardware cloth or another suitable material.  Inspect around the openings of plumbing too.

After you have thoroughly checked the exterior, then you will need to check the interior for openings.  There may be crevices in the baseboard which make a suitable entry point.  Cabinets located beneath sinks in the kitchen and bathroom should also be inspected for cracks and openings.  If you find anything make sure you seal it.

Many people are surprised to find out pests like rats and mice can climb very well.  They have the ability to climb your siding and enter through your roof or attic.  They can also climb trees located close to your home and use the overhanging branches to find an entry point.

During the winter you may need firewood to operate your fireplace.  If you keep it stacked on the ground, then ants and cockroaches will likely make their home there.  It is best for you to keep firewood stacked off the ground and always check it before you bring it into your home to use.

You will definitely want to ensure there are no sources of food for pests.  Do not leave dog food outside unattended because they love to eat it.  The same holds true for birdseed.  Any food you keep outside should be stored in a metal container since plastic containers are easy to chew through.

Another thing you need to do is keep your trash in a secure bin.  Not only does your garbage provide plenty of food for pests, but they can also use it as shelter.  You should be using a metal trash can with the lid always on tight.

These are some of the many things you need to do just before winter hits in an effort to keep pests out of your home.  Consider hiring a pest control company to inspect your home on a regular basis is also a good idea.
