The fans are used for blowing the air through the air conditioner system and into your home. While the evaporator coils change refrigerant from liquid to gas and the condensor coils turns refrigerant gas to into a liquid. The refrigerant lines carries the refrigerant between the coils. The compressor pressurizes refrigerant gas. Lastly the expansion device  regulates the refrigerant flowing to the evaporator. 

These are all of the parts tha make up the air conditioner. Air Conditioners are intricate systems, so if one part fails than they all fail. Due to all of the parts to an AC unit you should call a professional AC technician for air conditioning service. 

There are few things you should check before calling an air conditioning company because you may just need a simple fix. These are checking the batteries int he thermostat, checking the filter for your air conditioner, seeing if your air conditioner is keeping your home 20 degrees below the outside temperature, and knowing if you have a smart meter.

Your thermostat may just need new batteries so that is the first step you should take. If they are working fine you should check the filter to see if it's dirty because that may be the issue as well. After checking that you should check if your home is 20 degrees below the outside temperature because air conditioners can only cool a home down by about 20 degrees. Also knowing if you have a smart meter because it's an energy saver through SMUD or PG&E to help you save money, they'll turn off your AC if it's using too much energy. 

If all of this has been checked and your AC unit is still not working call an Air Conditiong Company. 

If your AC is working fine you may still want to get your AC serviced to keep it running smoothly and to prevent a repair when you need your AC the most.
