The space of a home's hallway often gets overlooked and is left to be a boring and unused space. It is a shame that more people are not utilizing this wonderful space in their home. Here are several tips to help you drop that drab hallway and gain a fabulously useful area in your home!

Tip 1

One of the easiest design elements you can place in a hallway is to add a large mirror at the end of your space. This not only elongates the hall, but also adds some reflection of natural light and brings warm tones to the area. Mirrors can be modern or traditional. It doesn't matter which you choose, just choose one that fits in with the design of the rest of your home.

Tip 2

To add a splash of colour, you can place a beautifully coloured runner rug down the length of the hallway. This will not only brighten up the space, but will add a touch of style and interest that will keep your hallway from looking dull. The rug can coordinate with your home colours or you can be bold and choose a colour that stands out from the rest of your home. These rugs can also be traditional, such as oriental or they can also be more modern with bold designs. The choice is yours!

Tip 3

Lighting is key! You want to choose a beautiful light that draws attention upward to also make the space look larger. You can choose a chandelier type of light if your ceiling allows. If not, there are some beautiful recessed lights that are available. Lighting up your space can totally transform it from dark and useless to vibrant!

Tip 4

If your space allows, you can place a type of seat at the end of the hallway. Benches with storage space underneath are a great choice to not only provide beauty and design but functionality as well. This provides a great reading area and also a storage area for those stray items that collect in our homes.

Tip 5

The colour of paint that you choose for your space is crucial! Too dark of a paint, can make the space feel cold and too light of a colour can make it look boring! Try out different colour swatches and see what works for your area. You might be surprised at what you come up with!

Finally

No matter how you choose to decorate your hallway, do it with pizzazz! Have fun and play up different looks and details. Add some different design elements and then pull it all together with some beautiful, framed prints. This will no longer be an area that you just pass through, but one that makes you want to stay a while!
