With the British population hitting a whopping 60 million and strict planning regulations still in place,West London families using loft extensions to increase living area. Articles I wasn’t surprised to hear that loft extensions in West London were back in fashion.

Families seem increasingly determined to extend their homes by opting for a loft extension in West London and other busy areas.

West London loft extensions, annexes and converted basements are all ways people are tackling the real estate challenges of the 21st century and maximising their homes.

With children remaining at home for longer, the West London-style loft extension is the most obvious and practical remedy for a crowded house.

Apart from the added amenity of a loft extension, there is much satisfaction to be gained from having conjured new square metres of living space, which will enhance a dwelling’s value on paper.

Despite the decline in the buy to let market, construction companies have still found reliable work performing loft extensions in West London neighbourhoods.

In Notting Hill the other day I got chatting to a builder who works for Clinton Foakes Building and Development.

He said a large proportion of the work they perform in West London is loft extensions.

This reminded me that our cities will see a significant shortage of affordable housing imminently unless more brown and green field sites are set aside for development.

The coalition government will need to conduct a painful reappraisal of the planning regime if it wants to avoid a housing crisis in the next fifty years - the boom in loft extensions could well be an early sign of things to come.

It should be noted again by policy-makers that there is only a finite amount of space on these islands and we cannot go on slapping blanket bans on developing whole swathes of perfectly useful land.
