E-commerce is rapidly becoming part and partial of modern lifestyle. Internet has slowly transformed from a medium of information to an essential component of life. The Googles,E-Commerce Websites Best Practices (Part – I) Articles Yahoos, Amazons etc of today have changed the way we lead our life and will continue to do so. One of the major shifts which internet has bought is in the retailing space; the whole world has been bought to home via the net.

The power of internet has been realized by many and this can be seen in the increasing number of online portals serving various services like shopping, travel, search engine, marketing etc. But, certain e-commerce players have gone on to become big and certain are still struggling. The key to success is not easy as this is a very dynamic environment but, there are certain fundamentals which need to be set for a successful e-commerce venture.

Some of the key features which an online portal should have are:

Search Engine Friendliness: There are over a million sites on the web and it is not possible for an individual to remember all the websites for his need. So it becomes natural for them to go to their site of interest via search engines. With the search engines playing such a dominant role in current age, the web-portal has to be optimized for search engines. Careful choice of keywords, meta-descriptions, URLs with keywords is some of the ways to have better visibility in the search results.

Security on website: All the transactions on website happen in virtual space and there is a high concern of the users about the security of their money transactions. An e-commerce website must have SSL and other payment related security enabled.

Search option on website: Ecommerce website is like a shop on net. Like in shops people like to see products, check out their choices and find new ones. The search option has to be necessarily easy to use and return results fast. Faster search results in higher conversions and increase sales per customer. A slow search will straight away result in loss of valuable sale and customer.

Direct Checkout: The checkout option on the web-portal should be flexible and a customer may not be necessarily forced to register to buy products. A good service for first time will automatically mean a higher probability of return of the customer. Registration may guarantee more information about customer but, may not be useful if the customer wants a faster checkout.

Consistency across web pages: The website appearance should be consistent across all its pages and the users can easily navigate from one product category to another. A consistent website will help the users for faster maneuverability across the web pages and products. This in turn will result in higher conversion rates.
