How do the “pros” get their websites listed in the number 1 slot every time?  Website optimization is the answer to making sure your website gets the top slot in all the search engines.

One of the most important things you can do for your website is to make sure that the search engines know what your site is about. The best way to do this is to use the same language as the search engines. This can be accomplished in just a few steps. Use "meta" tags

"meta" tags are a vital part of the HTML code for each web page that should never be forgotten or overlooked. There are several types of "meta" tags, but the most important types are:

• keywords - You want your website discovered when a search engine user searches for these particular words

• description - When your website is displayed for the user's search, this is the text that is displayed beneath your webpage title

• title - While not actually put into "meta" tag format, this is singly THE most important feature of EVERY page on your website. When your website is displayed as the result of a search engine user's search, this is the first thing displayed. This is your chance to make a first impression on the user. If a user bookmarks any page on your site, this is what is displayed as the text for the bookmark, so make each one appropriate for that particular page.

"meta" tags are always placed in the header of your web page:

• "title" - "This is the title for my website"

• "meta keywords" - "site content, content results, content my site handles, content, content of my site"

• "meta description" - "Whatever you want to be displayed as the text for your website"

• (make sure you follow the correct html formatting guidelines for these "meta" tags)

In order for the search engines to verify your website content you should make sure the first set of keywords is in the title of your site. The second set should be in your first sub-heading. The rest should all be headings in your website. This continuity tells the search engine that your site really is about what you are saying your site is about. If you have picked unique subject matter and you have followed these guidelines, your website should be at the top of the search results for at least your first one or two keyword groups with no further effort. However, to get your website listed at the top of the page for your other keyword groups a little more effort is required.
