If you love to text your friends, you are part of a new generation of communication. Never before has it been so easy to drop in a quick word to a friend about your current happenings.

There was e-mail, certainly, and during the 90s, that was the most popular way to communicate, but then recently, it became considered the new version of snail mail as texting took over as the quick and efficient way to communicate everything from tiny facts and observations to huge breakups. Now, texting is made possible even without a cellular phone, though most phones offer texting plans and services and it is easy to sign up and get unlimited texting. Many mobile phones are including a QWERTY keyboard made specifically for people with texting in mind.

But now, there are ways to text that don't involve a necessary telephone and don't involve any monthly bills that you have to pay at all. Pinger created Textfree for the iPhone and iTouch and offers people with Internet access the ability to send texts for free to any US mobile phone or fellow iTouch in the entire country. Many people feel as though texting is even more efficient than talking because people read faster than they talk and you do not have to beat around the bush with small talk or feel tied up. People are free to multi task as they send their responses and they are free to reply at their own convenience.

With Textfree, there are two kinds of subscriptions, one that requires no payment at all and also includes many different advertisements while you use it. Another version has a 6 dollar annual fee and offers you texting with no advertisement. However, other than that, both versions are very similar and offer a similar selection of features. When you join the Textfree program, you need to supply a valid e-mail address and then you will be prompted to create a Textfree account. Then, you will be allowed to select a phone number with an unusual area code and it will allow you to share your number with anyone who has a mobile phone or with anyone who has Textfree.

Once you get it, you can add your friends just as you would on a normal phone and then you can customize it in a variety of ways. Add your friends and then add their photo and contact information in their personal profile. Then, choose from a dozen different layouts for your text background page and from even more choices of ring tones and alerts. You can give each friend a different layout and ringer so that you know who is texting you. If you upgrade to a newer version, you will be allowed the opportunity to block people from whom you don't want any contact.

It is easy to text with this application as all of the contacts are placed in a list on the main home page and you can read the most recent text on each one. Textfree comes with a pop up notification service that can be turned on or off so that you will get a text no matter what you are doing, from checking e-mail, to listening to music, or browsing through your photos or videos on the iTouch.
