Of course, keeping in mind that it is estimated that a person is only caught drinking and driving about 5-10% of the times that they are actually doing it, so it makes you wonder how it is that anyone could say that they don't have a problem if they have been picked up for a DUI but most often this is their defense.
In most states, if you receive a DUI you may be able to get off with some community service in lieu of jail time but even first time offenders are usually mandated into a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program. Unfortunately, most don't take this type of mandated treatment seriously, usually because they are in denial that they have a problem. Most of course do follow up with this because this is usually a condition by which they can regain their driver's license and stay out of jail.

People who don't usually wind up either getting another DUI or getting locked up for a more serious crime that also refers to their substance abuse. Substance abuse very simply doesn't vanish and most people can't just will it off.
Then again rehabilitation can be a very effective means of turning a person's life around if they truly understand that they have a challenge and really want to come out and live a sober life. It is important to realize that treatment and counseling are not the only facets of a person's life that need to transform but they also many times need to change their environment and the people that they hang around in order to not only get sober but to remain that way.
There are quite a few community outreach programs that are in place to help those with substance abuse problems to get the assistance and support they need to make changes in their life. No one can cure alcoholism or drug addiction but there are organizations that can help people to get the resources they need to push through their addiction and come out the other side. There are also resources accessible to those who are living with a family member who has a substance abuse problem that are designed to guide and support them as well.
