The reality is that some divorces proceed smoothly – without animosity or drama. However,With the Right Team of Experts You Can Have a Dignified, Peaceful Divorce Articles most divorces have a strong emotional component that often makes them a volatile and contentious journey.

As a collaborative lawyer who practices in Walnut creek, CA (I also serve the nearby cities of Alamo, Danville, Concord), I am able to help clients get access to an entire team of experts (at a cost that doesn’t break the bank) to help my clients manage just about every aspect of their divorce in a calm; peaceful manner.

The Attorneys

In the collaborative law process, both you and your spouse retain an attorney. Both attorneys work together to help you and your spouse understand the law and how it applies to your particular situation. When necessary, we are able to rely on the expertise of other coaches to help to smooth your journey.

The Divorce Coach

In collaborative practice both you and your spouse also have a divorce coach. The divorce coach’s role is to help you and your spouse distinguish the business matters from the emotional issues of divorce. The divorce coach’s role is designed to assist you and your spouse with goal achievement, decision making, and life transitions.  It is based on an educational model that provides an opportunity for you and your spouse to learn.  The focus is on the present situation (the divorce) and learning how to approach and manage the challenges and decisions that divorce presents.

Let’s face it.  Divorce is a life altering event. Having an awareness of the factors necessary for change and the various stages of change makes it easier for clients to remain calm and patient and communicate with each other effectively.

The Financial Expert

The collaborative practice model is also unique because we can include the expertise of a financial expert who can help you and your spouse outline all the possible financial scenarios that may apply to your situation – including an analysis of possible tax consequences. With the use of very sophisticated software and expertise, the financial expert can give you and your spouse a tremendous amount of detailed information about the array of choices you may have in terms of your divorce. Financial experts have a bachelor's degree and a professional license or designation in good standing in one of the following: CFP - Certified Financial Planner; CPA - Certified Public Accountant; CA - Chartered Accountant; CFA - Certified Financial Analyst. They have experience and education in the financial aspects of divorce and/or personal financial planning concepts, which may include cash management and spending plans; retirement and pension plans; income tax; investments; real estate; insurance; property valuation and division; individual and family financial planning concepts. This enables them to give you and your spouse very detailed information about your options so you can make the best financial decisions possible for your family.

Child Specialists And because you and your spouse may have children to consider, the collaborative model also makes available to you a child specialist who has background, education and training in child development with a focus on children and their issues in divorce.  These specialists have post degree clinical experience using their skills and knowledge to help you and your spouse understand the issues that are unique to your children.  A child specialist can help you and your spouse set a foundation for co-parenting that will be productive and rewarding.

The Team Approach Speeds Healing

By bringing all these experts to the table at the right time in your divorce journey, we can give you and your spouse the necessary tools and coping strategies to deal with your divorce in a productive, healing manner.
