Backlinks (or inbound links) are the incoming links to a website.

Backlinks have great importance in the search engine optimization world because of they are a very important part of the equation for obtaining search engine visibility. This came about from the common practice of citing research studies in academic journals. The more citations, it is presumed, the more important the cited research is.

If it were that easy, webmasters could use automated programs that would obtain backlinks on hundreds or even thousands of websites. These programs do exist; however, they are inherently useless for a few reasons. First, the search engines caught on to this strategy many years ago and developed ways to identify “link farms” and greatly discredit any value they have. Second, the search engines have become a lot more sophisticated about what they consider a vote for another site.

All websites do not have the same credibility. For example, the BBC or CNN websites are generally thought to be full of relevant, high-quality information. A travel blog from your uncle’s Grand Canyon trip is probably a lot less useful to web surfers. An article on Wikipedia on the Grand Canyon, however, is, and would therefore carry a vote value much higher than your uncle’s blog.

Google, in particular, ranks each website on scale from 1-10, with ten being the highest possible ranking. This PageRank comes from hundreds of factors, but some of the big ones are time online, the content of the website and, not surprisingly, links to the website. A new website is almost invariably likely to be a “1”, which means a link from it to another website carries very little value or vote power. CNN, in contrast, has a page rank of 10, which means a link from it to your website would carry a huge amount of credibility, at least in Google’s eyes.

So, the lesson is three fold: 1) links are important, 2) “bad” links (i.e., link farms) are likely to do more harm than good, and 3) not all links are equal in value.
