There are a number of elements that need to come together, in order to create a truly successful small business. If you're the owner of a business, then you may well feel that you are under a certain amount of pressure.

Ultimately, you will be seen as being responsible, in case anything goes wrong. Eventually, you'll find that there are few other people left to blame.

You may not be the one dealing with customers on the phone, or making decisions about which suppliers to deal with, but you certainly do have a role when it comes to setting the strategy. You are charged with setting the agenda for the entire business.

If things are going wrong, then it's likely that you are to blame. That may sound like a really harsh statement, but you probably already know it to be true. You are ultimately responsble for products, services, pricing and choosing your employees. Most things that are going wrong will probably relate to one of these areas.

So how can you go about ensuring that everything stays on course? It seems to me that you need to consider your strategy regularly and take the time to review it. If things are going off course, then you need to be sure that you have the appropriate level of flexibility. You need to be able to improve the situation rapidly.

You'll probably find that you're able to do this with many areas of the business, but how do you feel about marketing? Is this an area where you maintain a suitable level of control? It's easy to convince yourself that marketing is really a background task. Unfortunately, this way of thinking can be extremely dangerous.

The problem with background tasks is that they simply aren't given the consideration that they deserve. This is a point that is worth mentioning again and again. If you don't have a successful marketing strategy in place, then you'll find that your business is likely to struggle.

This is something that will be critical to the success of your business. This should probably lead you to think more carefully about what's going on. Is your current marketing approach producing real results? Are you even managing to monitor those results?

You need to ensure that you are on the right track. If things are going wrong, then you really need to act.
