Basically mobile marketing and phone advertisement differ in the sense the one is text messaging service other is a direct call. The use of mobile phones for marketing is increasing day by day as text messaging advances. The cost is a factor but of late sms are lot less costly than before.  

Mobile marketing is basically sending promotional messages using the sms service.  SMS as means of text advertisement has become legal in many countries.  Mobile Marketing Association and IAB (Interactive Advertisement Bureau) have set up guidelines and standards the monitor text messaging for promotion. This is in order to prevent spam and misuse.    MMA is a global non profit organization with aim to encourage marketing with the use of mobile and cellular networks. There are around seven hundred companies belonging to more than forty countries that patronize MMA.

Mobile phone marketing via SMS is spreading rapidly all over the World. Similar content delivery can take place through MMS with greater interactivity and presentation.  Mobile phones with color screen are able to send or receive messages as MMS.

Customized advertisement specifically based on location is gaining popularity as well. LBS or location based services are offered by some mobile phone operators. Mobile marketing messages sent by SMS or MMS require user content hence it is a user controlled media. The mobile application development services have developed apps which give more control to users.

Due to ready availability of user database which some concerns sell of illegally spam and privacy protection is a major problem. This can only be checked by legislation which penalizes unsolicited communications.  If issues like these are not addressed quickly it may prove a dampener to growth of mobile marketing industry.
