Avoiding the Terror of Wedding Speeches

A wedding is a special time where friends and family all come together to celebrate the union of a special couple. During this occasion, it is tradition for some of those people to make speeches about the newlyweds.   This is a lovely experience and often very memorable for the bride and groom.  However, if you are giving one of the wedding speeches, it can be a day of terror.

To make the day less scary, it is helpful to write wedding speeches ahead of time.  This allows you time to work out the exact wording and emotion that you want to portray with what you say.  It also gives you a chance to think about what you truly want to convey to the crowd.  If public speaking is something that makes you nervous, being prepared is the best way to counteract that.

The speech should be broken down into three parts; the opener, middle, and closing.  The opener is the part that most people remember the best because they are focused on you and what you are saying. This is a chance to introduce yourself and get their attention.  During the middle part, many people choose to share a story about the couple. When doing this, it is important not to draw it out too long because you will lose the crowd and they will stop listening.   All stories should be short and to the point. The closing is the simplest part of the speech. This is the chance to wish the couple a happy marriage. Some people might choose to use a favorite quote or poem to do this but a simple “congratulations,” also works.
