Starting a full blown online business usually requires some start up capital. Are there truly legitimate ways to make money online...for free?

Earning some money online generally requires an initial investment. Owning a website costs money, and promoting your website could as well. Or you may purchase a book or report that describes how to make money without a website, your own product, or something like that. The point is that you're caught in this endless "it costs money to make money" spiral. Are there really any free online money making opportunities?

Now I'm not saying that you could earn a huge amount of money without any investment. But free online money making opportunities do exist. Here are three of them:

1) Start a blog with a blogging service like Wordpress or Blogger, and place PPC ads on it (like Google Adsense). Both services are free to join. Advertise your blog and generate traffic to it. When a visitor clicks on a PPC ad, you make money. The key to generating traffic to your blog is that you have to keep your blog focused on a certain topic or niche. Think about what kind of subject you want your blog to be about.

2) You could join a free affiliate program, and promote your affiliate link with free advertising methods. A few examples are blogging, forum posting, and article marketing. You make commissions when someone buys through your affiliate link.

3) Another free online money making idea is to take online paid surveys. There are many legitimate, free online survey companies out there. Businesses are always looking to improve their products and services, so they'll pay you for your opinion. Online surveys tend not to pay too much, but if you want some free extra pocket cash then paid surveys could be for you.

Even though scams and over-hyped opportunities do exist, you can still find free online money making opportunities. It is still possible to make money online, even if you don't have a website and a business. But even though they are free, they still require time and effort.
