The method of culturing the pearls was developed by William Sawville Kent first with the help of Tatsuhei Mise and Tokichi Nishikawa.

Japan is famous for its pearl culture as the method of producing the pearls were brought to Japan by Tokichi Nishikawa and Tatsuhei Mise by William Sawville Kent. The patent was granted in 1916 by Nishikawa. After granting the patent the method was applied to Akoya pearl oyster for the commercial purpose in the same year. There were another historical figure in Pearl History was Mitsubishi's Baron Iwasaki who produced cultured south sea pearl first in Philippines and after that in Buton and Palau. The original Japanese cultured pearls are known as Akoya pearls.
