A Guide to Perfume Testing

The market is flooded with perfumes and it's tricky to find the right perfume from among the lot. More perfumes will be releasing in the coming years, so it's essential that one should know how to test fragrances to make the ultimate choice.

The first step or more precisely the first walk should be towards the perfume center located in the market. This should be done even if you decide to make online purchases to test the perfume beforehand. Remember, you are going for testing so it's imperative that you should not wear any other perfumes during that period. Even one should avoid moisturizer, shower gel or any other scent.

It's obvious to get excited while going through wide range of perfumes at the counter, but make sure you talk with the assistant about your expectations from the perfume. They could give perfect guidance regarding what you should use for an event or party or what is the ideal perfume for a particular type of dress. The assistant behind the counter will identify selected perfumes matching your choice.

Try the perfume by applying it on your wrist and then take smell of the fragrance to check out if you like it at all. Expectations may somewhat differ sometimes because these fragrances might change with time based on the top, middle and end notes. The first smell reflects the top notes but after a certain period the same fragrance may differ relating to middle notes. Still after 20 or 30 minutes you could get the base note. Just check out the notes because these are the notes that you will be carrying all through the day during usage. Indulge in other shopping activities and give yourself enough time so that you could realize all perfume notes well. 

This process might consume time, as you need to check out more than one perfume and their fragrances. So the faster process would be to take out some paper strips and place different samples on each of them. In case of confusion you write name of the perfumes on each strip or request the assistant to do so.

Another perfume testing is done based on strength-EDT or EDP. Generally perfumes and eau de perfumes are somewhat stronger than the eau de toilettes, so make sure you are using the correct scent for the testing.

It's imperative that when you are trying on different scents you are bound to get confused and sometimes all fragrances give you the same feeling. This is common phenomenon when our nose gets overloaded with fragrance and we aren't able to distinguish one from other. The best way is to try not more than 3 or 4 fragrances per day. Moreover for 3 to 4 perfume tests its essential that you give your nose a bit rest between each test and take some fresh air to distinguish each aroma specifically. You could also have a strong filter coffee or peppermint tea during the break. Or smell your aroma free clothing to get back your natural scent so that you can start on another test.
