However, using great amounts of heat on your hair can be damaging and so to achieve both healthy hair as well as beautiful fashion, try these things to make sure that you accomplish both.

When using a flat iron, you need to first prepare your hair. You need to make sure that your hair is clean and free from the residue of any styling products or shampoo or conditioner. Washing your hair thoroughly with water to free your hair of any of these elements will prevent clumps and stickiness that can damage your hair when contacting the hot iron.

Shampooing and using conditioner will maintain the moisture in your hair, but be sure to thoroughly wash all of it out. Try to choose conditioners and shampoos that have hydrating power because the hot iron will suck dry the moisture from your hair and you will want something that is able to keep the moisture level in your hair high and rich. Also, use a well known conditioner that can keep your hair strong against the hardships of styling that it will soon meet.

While your hair is still wet, apply thermal sprays and various hair care serums to protect it from the damage about to come. These can come in tiny spray bottles that you spritz all over your hair and then comb through to spread. Or you can use different kinds of treatments but make sure that they are specialized in thermal treatment and make sure that you spread it all over your hair, something that is better done when the hair is wet. As your hair dries, the thermal treatment will soak into the strands and protect your hair.

Then, blow dry your hair. Straightening wet hair is a very inefficient maneuver and it is far better to blow dry and get your hair totally and completely free of water. Many straighteners can even fail miserably at straightening wet hair and then you will have burned and scorched your hair for nothing.

Once your hair has been dried, use a ceramic heated ionic hair dryer for the best results. The ones without this plating can cause serious burning of your hair and is very bad for the strands and follicles. Also, with ceramic ones, there will be less frizzing and better results. Also, choose one that has the right width for you. The ones that are two inches wide are good for long hair, but most people do just fine with the one inch to one and a half inch irons that are good for styling all types and lengths of hair. Straighteners with rounded edges are the ones meant for curls and flipping.

Choosing the right temperature is very important. The hot iron comes with settings and you need to make sure that you vary the intensity of the heat you use. Try to stay in the middle setting, because the lowest will do nothing and the highest will damage your hair profusely. Perhaps for very formal occasions, do the highest setting for a ramrod straight and glossy look but most of the time, just do the middle setting and avoid putting your hair through that much stress and tension.
